Ministries
City Church is committed to developing a comprehensive set of ministries that engage our culture, our university neighborhood, and the mercy and justice needs around us.
- LOVETOWN, PA Gene Schmidt, a NYC artist and director of the “Manhattan Measure” project, will be at City Church on Sunday, Feb 28th to speak about his new project, LOVETOWN, PA after the service. The project will line up 12”x12” square panels of reclaimed scrap wood, each with a letter cut out, to spell the entire text of St. Paul’s famous “love passage” from 1 Corinthians 13 on the streets of our City of Brotherly Love. The project, conducted through April, will begin in north Philly and end on Penn’s campus. In July, the documented project will be exhibited at Tiger Strikes Asteroid, an artist-run gallery in which our own Carolina Santa is a contributor.

Join us Friday, March 26 at 7PM for a light dinner, great camaraderie, and an engaging discussion on the ongoing topic of prayer. BYOB, and if you are able to contribute to food, let Stacy Bartholomew know. Limited childcare will be available, contact Susie Matter if needed.
- Lent Project Every year, City Church collects a “sacrificial offering” on Easter to address the mercy and justice needs around us. This year, if you are considering fasting from a common indulgence during Lent, consider also contributing the funds you might have spent on that item throughout the season to the sacrificial offering taken during the Easter service. It’s a great way to transform the “putting off” that fasting provides into the “putting on” of helping the poor.
- Good Friday Tenebrae On Good Friday, April 2, 7-8PM at Spruce Hill (our normal worship space), we will hold a Tenebrae service that mournfully observes the darkness of Jesus’ death and our need for God’s redemption (Tenebrae is Latin for “shadows”). Worship with us as our Lenten focus on God’s deliverance culminates in Jesus’ statement on the cross: “It is finished.” The service will include a dramatic reading of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion.
- Haitian Orphanage Update Meg Nam, who serves in the City Church children’s ministry, is on the board of directors of Hope for the Children of Haiti, which operates a Christian orphanage and school in Bolosse, an impoverished neighborhood in Port-au-Prince. They currently care for 55 orphaned children and provide affordable education to approximately 200 children. They are thankful for the Lord’s protection in the January 12th earthquake; no children or staff were hurt, and though several of the facilities were damaged, the children have all vital needs taken care of. From their latest update: We pray for all of the families in the midst of the adoption process who have been waiting to get their children home. May God give us all strength, wisdom, and patience. The first HFC child to make it to the United States after the earthquake was Bernadin, who has been united with his family, James and Mandy Moore of Spokane Valley, WA. Daniel and Stev, the children of board members Bill and Kang Henson have also arrived home to the Boston area. Several others have also made it home, you can see some of their stories chronicled in video format on our facebook page. Shortly after the earthquake, a group of about 50 members of the HFC community gathered in Acton, MA for a time of worship and prayer. It was a sweet time as we saw the body of Christ come together. Here are more Recent Updates and ways to pray for and contribute to their needs. Contact Meg if you have further questions or interest in assisting the orphanage.

- Refugee Resettlement Project City Church is sponsoring a refugee family with the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service as they begin their new life in Philadelphia. For updated donation needs, see the Program Overview and Needed Items documents at the bottom of this page.
